Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, you should be able to:

Describe the general principles of aging and the biomedical and psychosocial issues of aging

Recognize and apply the various dimensions of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability, and socioeconomic status, as they relate to older adults

Discuss legal, ethical, and advance care planning issues related to geriatric medicine

Appraise the financing of health care for older adults

Identify the basic principles of geriatric medicine, including assessment, prognostication, pharmacotherapy, prevention, exercise, palliative care, rehabilitation, and sensory deficits

Use state-of-the-art approaches or models of care for geriatric care while providing care in hospitals, office practices, nursing homes, home-care settings, telehealth platforms, and others

Diagnose and manage geriatric syndromes, including dementia, delirium, urinary incontinence, malnutrition, osteoporosis, falls, pressure injuries, sleep disorders, pain, dysphagia, and dizziness

Apply relevant information from other fields, such as cardiology, pulmonology, neurology, psychiatry, dermatology, dentistry, and gynecology, to the care of older patients

Employ quality indicators to assess and improve the care of older adults

Interpret evidence-based data to increase the effectiveness of teaching geriatrics to all health professionals
